WHEN SHOULD I HAVE A SEPTIC TANK INSPECTION?

We recommend you arrange to have a survey carried out at the first sign of any possible problems. Sooner rather than later is always best: the earlier any damage is identified, the easier it is to fix. If problems are left untreated, they will inevitably lead to further issues down the line and heftier repair costs. Replacing a septic tank can often set you back more than £10,000, so complacency can be costly. While there’s no legal requirement to have a regular septic tank inspection, it’s worth considering a regular tank health check to ensure it stays in good shape. Why not give Drain Division a call next time you are scheduling a tank empty?
It is always advisable to undertake an inspection when either buying or selling a property with a septic tank. Pre-purchase surveys on both septic tanks and drains can protect you from large repair bills in the future. They will also guarantee peace of mind, ensuring that the septic tank is fully compliant with current regulations and that there are no underlying issues within the drains.

WHY DOES MY TANK NEED REPLACING?

The main reasons you might need to replace your septic tank are as follows:

  • Your septic tank is not operating correctly or efficiently.

  • Your septic tank does not comply with current regulations which do not allow the discharge to flow into an open water course.

If this applies to you, then you may need to replace the existing tank with a new sewage treatment plant to ensure compliance with government regulations.

The Environment Agency introduced new rules on septic tanks in January 2020 to tackle pollution. You may not know if your system is compliant with these regulations, or you may be experiencing some problems. Either way, Drain Division can help you.

If you have a septic tank that is discharging directly to surface water, such as a river, ditch or stream, then you are failing to comply with the new legislation. You need to urgently replace or upgrade your sewage treatment system if this is the case. Failure to do so could mean that you risk prosecution or a significant fine from the EA.

We can help you to be sure that you are compliant by carrying out a CCTV Survey on your complete system. Providing you with all the information that you need, at this point we will be able to advise you on the best solution: if you’re not compliant, we can either upgrade your existing tank via reconfiguration of pipework and/or rerouting the output; or replace the septic tank in its entirety with an up-to-date system.
